Kollam- Kottapuram West Coast Canal - National Waterway NW-3












The West Coast Canal or National Waterway No 3 is a 168-km stretch of this inland navigational route located in KeralaIndia and runs from Kollam to Kottapuram and was declared a National Waterway in 1993. In addition to the main stretch, Champakara and Udyogmandal canals are navigable and connect the industrial centers of Kochi to Kochi port Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) under the Ministry of Shipping is coordinating the task for developing, monitoring and administering national waterways. It is the first National Waterway in the country with 24-hour navigation facilities along the entire stretch.It has been extended to Kozhikode as per National Waterways Bill, 2015

Boat Terminals

Terminals at seven locations namely Kottapuram, Aluva, Maradu, Viakom, Thaneermukam (Chertala), Trikkunnapuzha and Kayamkulam have already been constructed.Under PDO/PDC mechanism, the PDO was entrusted the work of formulating a project for operation and maintenance of these terminals as a PPP project. The PDO had made a field visit and collected relevant data and they were in the process of formulating the project. Construction of 8th terminal at Kollam by CPWD was also in progress. For providing facilities for mechanical handling at these terminals, 8 mobile cranes and 8 fork lifts were procured and provided at each terminal.


Tourist Boat Service Between Kollam & Alappuzha

The service starts at 09.30 A.M. on all days from Kollam & Alappuzha. A pleasure trip through the waves of the famous lakes viz. Vembanad, Kayamkulam & Ashtamudi etc. and also through narrow canals at the lowest rate offering the tourists maximum enjoyment of the entire secnic beauty of Kerala. The journey from Alappuzha takes the Tourists to Punnamads Canal, where the world famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race is conducted, the training centre of the Sports Authority of Inda (SAI), Lake Vembanad and then to the jetty "Mangalassery". If alighted at Mangalassery Jetty, the place whee the sacred river Pampa joins Lake Vembanad, paddy farming places below sea level and the MOTOR BASE (Motor Thara) used for sucking out water from the paddy fields etc. can be seen.
The journey then proceeds through the River Pallathruthy to Kavalackal Village Jetty at Chembassery, Kuttanadu Agricultural lands and tourists huts on river banks etc. are the sights at this place. The statue of "KARUMADIKUTTAN" on the river bank, which is supposed to be the Statue of Lord Budha is another tourist attraction of the place.
The journey continues through Pallana, Kumarakodi, where the famous Malayalam Poet and Revelutionary Kumaranashan who helped to bring in great changes in the Social System of the state met with his tragic death in the capsizing of Boat "REDEEMER". The land of Coir and Coir Products namely Trrikunnappuzha is the other destination of the journey. For the rest and food, 10 minutes time will be allowed to the Tourists when the boat reaches at Thrikunnappuzha Coir Village Jetty.
After this slight pause, the journey resumed through Aayiramthengu, Kayamkulam Jetty to reach Amrithapuri, where the "ASRAMAM" of Matha Amrithanantha Mayi, who is worshiped worldwide by many devotes is visible. Amrithapuri is a sacred place, bledning natural beauty with the metaphysical thoughts of mankind, reducing great spiritual pleasure.
The last stage of the jopurney starts from here. The boat passes through Tharyilkadavu, Alumkadavu, Kovilthottam, Chavara, Pallikkodi & Kavanadu to reach the final destination of Kollam.
This eight hour long journey will be an unforgettable experience all thorugh the life of a tourist.
